My phone beeped with an incoming message a couple of weeks ago….. ‘The past week saw Coronavirus making inroads into our campus which has been untouched by the pandemic for more than a year.’
As this message from a senior staff member at Pandita Ramabai Mukti Mission arrived, we were shocked. We have been so thankful that Mukti in India has been kept free from COVID-19 for over a year despite the devastation all around in India, and particularly in Maharashtra, the state where the main Mukti campus is located. But as the numbers rise right across India, it has now crept into the Mukti campus. And now, over 70 women, girls and staff have tested positive for COVID-19 and are being treated in the Mukti hospital. A number of staff families are in home isolation, and others have been admitted to Pune Hospitals.
Each time my phone beeps or rings there is another update and the numbers increase – more women and girls, senior staff, staff families in isolation, relatives and parents of staff, or former staff who have died, women who still call Mukti ‘home’ and it goes on relentlessly. Our media services give us the numbers daily, 300,000 to 400,000 new cases each day across India……
What can we do?
We can turn away and not want to know, like a lady I spoke to at a Mukti stall recently
We can respond as Jesus would have us do!
PRAY for the nation of India in the devastating situation they are in. PRAY for the team at Mukti – for the staff, the women, the girls, the single mums and their children, the boys, for the leadership team and the Board of Governors. They all need our prayers – for wisdom in dealing with the situation, for the supply of much needed medicines, for healing, for comfort for those who have lost loved ones and family members.
WE CAN ALSO ACT… AND GIVE!
Here at Mukti Australia we have responded over the past year with personal protective equipment (PPE), medicines and food relief packs for communities facing starvation, but now we need to do more….
And in SRI LANKA…
Sri Lanka has hardly been mentioned in the media, but Colombo is a hotspot for COVID-19, particularly the area where our Wings of Hope Centre is located. Our leaders, Rebecca and Adrian were relocated to a safer area at Hatton for a time, due to health concerns for their young family.
The Wings of Hope teachers cannot visit the children and families in our programs in both Colombo and at Hatton in the tea estates, but they are still reaching out with educational work sheets so children can keep up with their schooling. All other programs are closed.
Food sustainability in Sri Lanka is an urgent issue – families are not able to provide food for their evening meal and are depending on Wings of Hope for relief packages.
